The timing of this exhibition celebrates of the 400th Anniversary of Rembrandt’s beginnings as an Etcher when he completed his first series of four etching plates, all focused on the early life of Christ and his ministry.
Rembrandt’s first etching titled The Circumcision, 1626 was completed in the second half of 1625 [printed between 1626 and 1629]. The plate was submitted to the Berendrecht print shop in Harlem in the northern area of Amsterdam. Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn made his first etching at the age of nineteen depicting a subject based on Christian teachings. It was one of more than seventy biblical subjects that inspired his work and life.
This exhibition is a reflection of the man as an artist, teacher, husband and father, and one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art, possessing an exceptional ability to render people in their various moods and masquerades.
